Unmistakable, two Silver-washed Fritillary butterflies feed on the blossom of a sweet chestnut tree. High up in the boughs, they flit and glide, drawn irresistibly to the tree’s sweet-scented flowers. The Silver-washed Fritillary is the UK’s largest resident fritillary, and males can be recognised by the dark scent-marking streaks on their upper wings.
