Inspired by Wordsworth’s poem The Cuckoo, this elusive bird’s annual return to the UK countryside always signals the start of summer for me. Its distinctive call is one of my favourite seasonal sounds—magical, mysterious and wonderfully nostalgic. Here it is, perched among the boughs of an elderflower hedgerow, surrounded by delicate frothy blooms, heralding the arrival of summer.
